Season 2: Episode 8, Justin Wales

Justin Wales is the Head of Legal for the Americas at Crypto.com. Justin is a seasoned crypto lawyer, practicing for over ten years in the space, and is a pioneer in the field.

Justin started his career in big law handling constitutional issues and First Amendment issues for the press and other entities. While working at big law, Justin began to learn about cryptocurrency. He joined meetings with like-minded individuals and really jumped into the cryptocurrency community. Justin went on to start his firm’s cryptocurrency practice.

Justin shares his story of going from big law to leading the legal department of one of the biggest cryptocurrency trading platforms. Justin also shares personal experiences as a lawyer. He tells us about some of the great advice he received from his mentor, Richard Ovelman.

Justin also tells us how he decided to write a book on cryptocurrency law, completed the book, and published it. The book, The Cryptocurrency Handbook, is already being used by law schools as a tool in regulatory and cryptocurrency law classes. Justin plans to update the book regularly. As if this wasn’t enough, Justin is behind Crypto.com’s lawsuit against the SEC, asserting that the agency lacks the authority from Congress to regulate secondary market sales of crypto and challenging its ongoing practice of using enforcement actions to unlawfully expand its oversight of the crypto industry. The complaint alleges that the SEC’s regulation of crypto as securities violates federal law. The complaint is a must read for anyone interested in cryptocurrency law.
